THE MEDITERRANEAN QUESTION
"The Mediterranean Question" reveals cultural relationships and hidden narratives, far beyond conventional architecture discourses about the "Mediterraneus" (medius terra) that, for centuries, represented the centre of commercial, cultural exchanges and conflicts. Antonio Pizza addresses the theme of the Mediterranean syncretism in Spanish art and architecture during the first decade of the 20th century, with a special focus on residential architecture, reviewing existing approaches and revealing novel ones. Ricardo Agarez presents the Algarve, in Portugal, as the most Mediterranean part of what is an Atlantic country by scrutinizing its architecture as a new way of understanding the past and envisioning the future. Mafalda Pacheco presents the urban and architectural evolution of Fuzeta, a coastal fishing settlement in Algarve and its relationship with other Mediterranean settings, by examining vernacular houses with similar construction techniques, including the system of vaults and roof terraces. João Santa Rita explains how far an anonymous modern single family house (Alporchinhos, Algarve) was developed in deep correlation with the elements of its physical and cultural context, following vernacular influences.
THE SHAPE OF THE CITY
The Shape of the City presents updated essays on architecture and urbanity, deconstructing the common approach to the history of the city – mainly Eurocentric, American, male, divided between public and private initiatives – by offering new built narratives in which the main protagonists are not the usual suspects. Tom Avermaete addresses the dichotomy between the Global South and the Global North by presenting the experiments in modernity undertaken in Casablanca and Chandigarh; Hilde Heynen explores the latent dichotomy in the ideology of the two spheres, through an awareness of the presence of gender patterns in the shape of the city; Sarah Whiting reveals how economics defines politics, culture and society in the American context, showing how Chicago is being transformed through demolition, stressing the possibilities that a renewed, contemporary form of civic society could foster. Finally, Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani explores a methodological proposal of presenting what are the broad conditions that shape our cities, by going deep into determinations and dependencies ranging from environmental and technological conditions to social issues and cultural manifestations.

ocean modelling for coastal management: case studies with mohid
Numerical modelling tools for marine systems have developed at a brisk pace over the last decades. By the turn of the century they were already ‘’tools of the trade” in ocean studies and coastal zone management, as shown by the variety of models available today. Now, more than ever before, studies in most fields of marine sciences rely on process-oriented models as basic research tools.
Coastal areas have usually been the most populated regions in the planet, and it is estimated that more than 60% of the world’s population lives in these areas at present. Coastal regions are complex systems where conflictive interests surrounding the use and management of its resources are frequent.
This book brings together a wide range of ocean modelling applications based on MOHID to support research and coastal management. The MOHID model (www.mohid.com) is an open-source modelling system based at MARETEC, a research group at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Portugal. The MOHID community has more than 2000 registered users worldwide, and this volume illustrates the global reach of the model.

3DPUSHOVER 2008 - NONLINEAR STATIC METHODS FOR DESIGN/ASSESSMENT OF 3D STRUCTURES
A two-day workshop on Nonlinear Static Methods for Design/Assessment of 3D Structures was held at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (Instituto Superior Técnico - IST) on 5-6 May 2008. The Workshop was co-chaired by Rita Bento (IST, Lisbon, Portugal) and Rui Pinho (University of Pavia, Italy) and was organized within the scope of the Portuguese national research project POCI/ECM/59306/2004, named “Performance-based Seismic Design Procedures”, of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia - FCT). PERSPECTIVES ON INTEGRATED COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT IN SOUTH AMERICA
From a human history perspective, the intrinsic characteristics of estuaries have made them preferable sites of occupation and, consequently, intense areas of development. A direct consequence of human occupation of these coastal areas is that estuaries rank among the environments most affected by human presence and activities. The fast expansion of socio-economic activities on coastal and estuarine areas over the last decades, such as tourism, nature conservation, coastal fisheries and industrial and urban development has expanded and complicated the management tasks. (...)
EURO FGI 2007 - WORKSHOP ON IP QOS AND TRAFFIC CONTROL
This book provides an overview of the ongoing research on congestion control, traffic management and traffic engineering for fixes, wireless and spontaneous (ad hoc and sensor) networks. Following the success of the Workshop on QoD and Traffic Control organized in December 2005 in Paris, the EuroFGI Workshop on IP QoS and Traffic Control includes papers updating the current understanding in these key areas and highlighting new topics in need of further research. (...)
