CARLOS SALEMA
The author was born in 1942, in Ponta Delgada, Azores
He graduated in Electrical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in 1965, where he taught mainly microwave radio links. He retired in 2003 as a Full Professor (emeritus in 2009).
He received a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the University of London (Queen Mary College) in 1972, with a thesis on conical dielectric antennas.
For 20 years, from 1966 to 1986, he provided consulting services in telecommunications systems at Hidrotécnica Portuguesa.
From 1986 to 1989, he was the chairman of the Nacional Board for Scientific and technological research (JNICT).
From 1993 he was, and currently still is, affiliated with the Instituto de Telecomunicações, a large Portuguese research institute, of which he was chairman of the board from 1993 to 2023.
He is currently a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, over which he presided from 2007 to 2009. He is also a member of the Academy of Engineering and was chairman of its board from 2009 to 2011.
He is an advisory member of the Ordem dos Engenheiros and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
He received the Marconi Prize from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) (1974) and the URSI career prize (2009).
Doctar honoris causa degree from the University of Beira Interior (2014). Medal of scientific merit from the Portuguese Ministry of Science (2021). Professor Emeritus diploma, from the Polytechnic of Leiria (2023).
The author has published over 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 5 books (3 in English and 2 in Portuguese).
