Jacek Banasiak

JACEK BANASIAK nasceu a 15 de março de 1959 em Łódź, Polónia. Concluiu o mestrado em Engenharia pela Universidade Técnica de Łódź em 1981, doutorou-se pela Universidade de Strathclyde em Glasgow, Escócia, em 1989, e obteve a Agregação pela Universidade de Varsóvia em 1999. Lecionou na Universidade Técnica de Łódź entre 1981 e 1992, altura em que integrou o Departamento de Matemática e de Matemática Aplicada da então Universidade de Natal, atual Universidade de KwaZulu-Natal, em Durban, África do Sul, onde foi diretor da School of Mathematical Sciences em 2005-2007 e em 2008 atingiu a posição de Senior Professor. Desde janeiro de 2016 é o DST/NRF Chair em Modelos e Métodos Matemáticos em Biociências e Bioengenharia na Universidade de Pretória, África do Sul.

A investigação de Jacek Banasiak centra-se na Análise Matemática de modelos não-locais integro-diferenciais em teoria cinética, biomatemática, fragmentação-coagulação, e análise assintótica de problemas com múltiplas escalas. É autor ou co-autor de cinco monografias de investigação, mais de uma centena de artigos científicos, orientou oito estudantes de doutoramento e mais de vinte de mestrado.

Em 2012 recebeu a Award for Research Distinction da Sociedade Sul-africana de Matemática e em 2013 a Cruz de Mérito (Prata) da República da Polónia. É membro da Academia da Ciência da África do Sul e membro correspondente da Academia das Ciências Africana.

Jacek Banasiak was born on the 15th March 1959 in Łódź, Poland. He graduated with MSc (Engineering) from the Technical University of Łódź in 1981, received PhD from the Strathclyde University in Glasgow in 1989 and Habilitation (DSc) from the University of Warsaw in 1999. In 2007 he received the State title of Professor conferred by the President of the Republic of Poland. He was a lecturer at the Technical University of Łódź from 1981 till 1992, when he joined the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Natal (later the University of KwaZulu-Natal) in Durban, South Africa, where he reached the position of Senior Professor in 2008 and served as the Head of the School of Mathematical Sciences in 2005-2007. Since January 2016 he has been the DST/NRF Chair in Mathematical Models and Methods in Biosciences and Bioengineering at the University of Pretoria.

Research interests of Jacek Banasiak are: nonlocal, integro-differential models in kinetic theory, mathematical biology and fragmentation-coagulation theory, asymptotic analysis of multiple scale problems. He has authored/co-authored 5 research monographs, over 100 refereed research papers and supervised 8 PhD and over 20 MSc students. In 2012 he received the South African Mathematical Society Award for Research Distinction, in 2013 received Cross of Merit (Silver) of the Republic of Poland.

Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences and member of the Academy of Science of South Africa.
