João Bento

João Bento (JB) is CEO of CTT – Correios de Portugal and the VP of the Engineering Academy, Portugal.

He has a Civil Eng. Degree (1983) and an MSc in Struct. Eng. (1987), both from Técnico, Lisbon, a PhD in Civil Eng., from Imperial College, London (1992), the equivalent Doctoral degree from Univ. Lisboa (1992), and holds an “Agregação” in Intelligent Systems, again from IST (1998).

He was CEO of Grupo Manuel Champalimaud (2015-19). Prior to that position, he was CEO of Efacec (2011-15), leading the company through a deep restructuring up to the arrival of a new shareholder. He was also Exec. Director for Brisa, Portugal (2000-11), responsible for the operational restructuring and, later, business development, diversification and internationalization, having chaired the BoD of several concessionaires or service companies in the road and high-speed rail sectors.

JB held non-Executive positions in various other companies, such as the Group José de Mello (2013-15), EDP (2000-03), CCR (Brazil, 2008-10), Adamastor Capital (2002-04) and was Exec. Director at Brisatel – a telco carrier’s carrier (2000-01) and Logiser – a software house he created (1985-87; 92-94).

JB is Honorary (and Past) President of ASECAP (European Assoc. of Tolled Motorways), was the President of COTEC Portugal – the Portuguese Association for Business Innovation, a BoD Member of IBTTA (Int. Bridge, Tunnel & Turnpike Association), President of APCAP (Portuguese Assoc. of Tolled Motorways) and a member of the Advisory Board of InIR (Portuguese Road Sector Regulator).

Having derived from an academic career, he maintained until 2011 a regular academic interest as Full Professor at Tecnico, having supervised 11 PhD Theses and 15 MSc Theses. He has authored or co-authored more than 160 scientific papers, books or book chapters.

In 2016 was awarded the Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique (Grand Cross of the Order of Henry the Navigator) by the President of the Portuguese Republic.
