Rui Dilão é Professor de Física Matemática e Sistemas Dinâmicos no Instituto Superior Técnico.

Doutorou-se em Física em 1986 e obteve a Agregação em 1997. Foi investigador do CERN, onde colaborou no projeto de planeamento do Large Hadron Collider. Colabora regularmente em projetos de investigação de âmbito europeu e tem sido investigador visitante de várias instituições científicas internacionais.

É autor de mais de 80 publicações de investigação em sistemas dinâmicos, física matemática, morfogénese, biofísica e biomatemática. Orientou mais de 50 teses de mestrado e de doutoramento. É autor e editor de livros de investigação científica, de ensino universitário e de divulgação.

Résumé of Rui Dilão

Rui Dilão served as Professor of Mathematical Physics, Dynamical Systems and Computational Biophysics at the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, from 1997 to 2025. He earned his PhD in Physics (Mathematical Physics) from the University of Lisbon in 1986, followed by his Habilitation in 1997. Between 1986 and 1988, Dilão was a research fellow at CERN, where he contributed to the planning of the Large Hadron Collider. He later collaborated on the scientific program for Portugal’s first satellite, PoSAT-1 (1992–1993). In recognition of his contributions to laboratory medicine, he and two colleagues received the LabMed Prize for original research in 1999. He has published more than 80 research papers spanning a wide range of fields, including: Dynamical systems and chaos theory, Celestial mechanics, Ecological and economic modelling, Mathematical biology and Biophysics, Morphogenesis and Nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems. His publications include: a book on dynamical systems, a co-authored book on particle accelerator design using dynamical systems, two undergraduate textbooks, and an educational kit introducing latitude and longitude concepts to middle school students. He has delivered over 100 lectures and presentations at international academic and research conferences. His mentorship includes supervising four PhD dissertations, guiding more than 50 Master’s students, and serving as an advisor to four postdoctoral researchers.

Throughout his career, he coordinated and participated in 18 research projects, notably serving as principal investigator for a work package in the European Commission-funded GENNETEC project (2006–2009), and collaborated with several international research institutions.

He regularly reviews for several academic journals and has served as evaluator and on steering committees for two European Science Foundation research programs. Additionally, he has contributed as an expert evaluator for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships. Dilão has organised numerous research meetings both in Portugal and internationally and has edited several conference proceedings. He is a member of professional societies.
